[스페셜경제= Dongsu Kim] The City of Paris filed a lawsuit against Airbnb Inc. for publishing 1,000 illegal rentals adverts that could cast the American rental website over 12.5 million euros ($14 million), the city's mayor told a newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.
Based on French law, homeowners in Paris are permitted to rent out their places on short-term rental platforms for up to 120 days per year. Their advertisements should include a registration number in order to make sure that the properties are not rented out for longer periods, Reuters reported.
The report added that in 2018, France passed a law that makes rental website companies like Airbnb punishable by fines of 12,500 euros for each illegal posting. This is a new provision that Paris plans to use in challenging the hospitality service provider in court, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper.
“The goal is to send a shot across the bows to get it over with unauthorized rentals that spoil some Parisian neighborhoods,” the mayor said in his interview.
Several cities all over the globe have openly expressed their concerns that platforms such as Airbnb stand as unfair competitors against bigger hospitality providers like hotels and could possibly turn some neighborhoods into sterile, tourist-only locations.
Airbnb had imposed measures to help Paris users of its rental website to comply with European policies, a company spokeswoman said. However, she added, that the rules in the city of Paris were "inefficient, disproportionate and in contravention of European rules.”
France is the rental website company's second-largest market next to the United States, with Paris as Airbnb's biggest single market—mainly because the city among the most visited cities in the whole world and has around 65,000 homes listed on the website.
Airbnb was founded in 2008 in San Francisco and aims to match people who wish to rent out all or part of their homes to temporary guests through the website.
