[스페셜경제= Dongsu Kim] Vietnamese airlines VietJet and Bamboo Airways signed deals with Boeing on Wednesday to purchase 110 planes with a worth of over $15 billion as the rapidly growing carriers seek to expand their operations within and beyond Asia.

In a CNBC report, VietJet closed a firm order to acquire 100 737 MAX planes worth $12.7 billion, which was made provisionally last July. Bamboo, on the other hand, signed a firm deal with Boeing to buy 10 wide-bodied 787 carriers valued at a total of $2.9 billion.

Bamboo is under the management of property and leisure firm FLC Group, which chairman Trinh Van Quyet said is also in discussions to purchase 25 narrow-bodied Boeing 737 planes. Last year, the airlines have put a provisional order for 20 Boeing 787 widebody planes tagged at $5.6 billion at the list prices; the Wednesday deal is not a part of that, according to CNBC.

"The purchases are part of our strategy to expand our operations on the international market, including flying to the United States and Europe," the Bamboo chairman said. Quyet said the airline is planning to unveil its first non-stop flights to the United States either later this year or in early 2020.

Earlier this month, the US Federal Aviation Administration announced that Vietnam has complied with international aviation standards. This compliance would allow Vietnamese airlines to operate to the US, a first in aviation history, and codeshare with carriers in the US.

Meanwhile, VietJet also closed a $5.3 billion worth of long-term engine support deal with General Electric for the airline's LEAP-1B engines.

The deals for VietJet and Bamboo came on the sidelines of a summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Hanoi, the country's capital. Trump considered Vietnam as a model of economic success that rogue North Korea could follow.
